Day 4: Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast in the chattering forest, we start a slow walk to aid acclimatization through the forest and into the Hagenia zone, where the vegetation begins to thin out as we approach the Shira Plateau. Shira is one of the three craters of the Kilimanjaro volcanic massif, the others being Mawenzi and Kibo and from our camp we have great views of the Shira needles and the distant form of the Mount Meru.
Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp 3500m (BLD)
Day 5: Moir Hut
We explore beneath the Northern Icefields, an area almost totally unvisited by tourists and with unusual views of Kibo. The morning walk is a steady climb away from the moorland of Shira Plateau to reach the broad upland desert beneath the Lent Hills, with expansive views in all directions. After lunch in our camp close to Moir Hut (4,200 m), there is the option of a more strenuous afternoon walk to reach the summit of the Lent Hills (4,700 m). Few visitors get to this remote corner of Kilimanjaro. [3-6 hours walking]
Day 6: Baranco camp
After breakfast, we continue walking east and the looming form of the Kibo massif ahead. Shortly after the junction from where the Kibo North Circuit turns off, the route crosses a widevalley. From here the lava tower can be seen, which is also called the Shark Tooth. South to the glacier streams and, shortly before the Tower, we turn off towards Barranco Camp situated at 13,000ft/ 3,900m, 5-6 hrs.
Day 7: Karanga Camp
A steep descent into the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. A short climb up the famed Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain is volcanic scree, with pockets of vegetation in sheltered hollows, and a powerful sense of mountain wilderness. Our next camp is at Karanga Camp (4,000 m), the last water point on the approach to the summit. [5-7 hours walking]
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp (BLD)
Day 8: Barafu
We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600 m) for lunch. There is a short acclimatization walk to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East valley (4,800 m). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. [3-5 hours walking] Dinner and overnight at barafu Camp (BLD)
Day 9: Summit / Mweka Camp
Thanks to our careful acclimatization and slow ascent to this final camp, we are closer to the summit than any of the other climbers and do not have a grueling final day with only a final two hour hike to the crater summit and a ten minute final stretch to Uhuru Summit 5895m, the Roof of Africa. Arriving at the summit for sunrise, we are captivated by the sweeping vistas in all directions, applauding the sheer magnitude of our achievement before we start our descent After a thrilling scree run for two hours, we follow the Mweka descent path, feeling the air thicken as we descend, as we reach Mweka Camp after a tiring but rewarding seven hour trek and descent. Here we celebrate our achievements amidst the thick forest reliving one of the definitive moments of our life. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp 3080m (BLD)
Day 10: Mweka gate.
After breakfast then we continue to go down to Mweka gate 1630m where you re register and sign out: . This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. Lunch will be saved at a selected spot and staffs will say goodbye by singing the songs of congratulation for a successful climb. After lunch we are going to be transferred to a lodge where day room are reserved for shower, re-pack and early dinner before transferring to the airport for international flight back home.
